Viton
Viton is the trade name of DuPont Performance Elastomers for their fluoroelastomers . The relatively expensive Viton is used in technology as a sealing material with high thermal and chemical resistance, for example as an O-ring seal for detachable flange connections in vacuum technology . Due to the good solubility of Viton in esters and acetone , it is still used as a binder in the processing of explosives and in pyrotechnic sets, e.g. B. MTV ( Magnesium / Teflon / Viton ) are used. Depending on the chain length and the ratio of the monomer componentsViton is also available as a highly viscous paste, which softens at around 100 ° C and can then be processed by extrusion .
In contrast to other elastomers, it holds hydrocarbons such as B. oils and fuels stood at higher temperatures without swelling or dissolving.
FKM is the international abbreviation according to the DIN-ISO standard (formerly: FPM) and the American standard ASTM.
Applications
- Seals: The Seals of the space shuttle - solid booster made of the heat-resistant Viton. When the Challenger Space Shuttle crashed , the behavior of the material at low temperatures played an important role.
- Round cords
- Hoses
- Shrink tubing
- Protective gloves
