Vivelin of Strasbourg
Vivelin von Strasbourg (also Vivelin Rufus (lat.), Vivian le Rous (French), Vivelin the Red ; † after 1347) was an Alsatian Jewish banker in the 14th century and probably one of the richest people in the German Empire .
Vivelin was resident in Strasbourg by 1336 at the latest . Nothing further is known about its origin. He did his bigger business with the Archbishop of Trier Baldwin of Luxembourg , but also with the English King Edward III. before the Hundred Years War in 1339. As a pledge for a loan totaling over 340,000 guilders , the English royal crown, which was worth a good 25,000 guilders , was temporarily assigned to him.
After 1347 there are no more traces in the sources, he could have perished in the Strasbourg pogrom in 1349 .
