Vivi is a small town in the Democratic Republic of the Congo , in the Congo Central Province . Vivi lies on the banks of the lower Congo across from the provincial capital Matadi . It was founded in 1880 by the Africa explorer Henry Morton Stanley and was the first capital of the Congo Free State . From there, Stanley drove forward the development of the Congo. In April 1886 the capital status was transferred to Boma .
