Vjekoslav Kaleb (born September 27, 1905 in Tijesno near Šibenik , † April 13, 1996 ) was a Yugoslav writer.

Life

Vjekoslav Kaleb was a teacher by profession. He attended teacher training colleges in Zadar , Belgrade and Šibenik and graduated from the Zagreb University of Education . He then taught in various villages in the Dalmatian hinterland and then in Šibenik and Zagreb. In the Second World War he was active in the people's liberation struggle from 1943. After the war he worked with the magazines Naprijed , Književnik and Republika . He was secretary of the Association of Croatian Writers and artistic director of Zagreb-film. Since 1957 he has devoted himself exclusively to writing. In 1960 he became a member of the academy.

Works

Shortly before the Second World War, Kaleb wrote his first short stories that made him known as a writer. He wrote a total of 57 stories, most of which are set in the backward Dalmatian hinterland. In contrast to Dinko Šimunović , he does not portray the inhabitants of this area as grandiose and heroic, but backward and frozen. His language is sparse and economical. These stories are Kaleb's literary masterpieces that set him apart from other authors of his time. After the war he also addressed the people's liberation struggle several times, but with significantly less artistic power. A novel on this subject, Divota prašine , is one of the best works on war. Kaleb also wrote, wrote essays and translated for the film.
