Goethe and the Wolfsberg

Tuffite from the Vlčí hora with idiomorphic augite crystal
Kaersutit from the Vlčí hora

From 1823, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe dealt with the rocks of the Bohemian volcano as part of his mineralogical studies. He was particularly interested in both the large Augites and the amphiboles (Kaersutit). Since Goethe was particularly interested in the formation of these idiomorphic crystals, the chemist Johann Wolfgang Döbereiner in Jena carried out melting tests on these crystals. It was also Frédéric Soret commissioned by Goethe to characterize the augite and amphibole of Wolfsberg morphologically. His results were then published in a journal published by Goethe ( Zur Naturwissenschaft Ever ) in French under the title Catalog Raisonné des variétés d´Amphiboles et Pyroxène rapportées de Bohème par HE Monsieur le Ministre d´État de Goethe . By Hans Prescher this work has been translated into German language and published.
