Vladas Gefenas

Vladas Gefenas (born October 31, 1955 in Vilnius ) is a Lithuanian chemist and chess master . In 1987 he became European champion in correspondence chess .

Life

In 1978 he completed his diploma in chemistry at the Vilniaus universitetas (VU) and in 1987 received his doctorate from the Politechnikos institutas in Kaunas as a candidate for science. From 1978 to 1982, 1991–1998 he was a research assistant at the chemistry faculty and from 1982 to 1991 at the physics faculty of the VU. From 1998 to 2011 he taught at the VPU. From 2005 to 2010 he was head of the chemistry department at VPU. Since 2012 he has been a lecturer at Lietuvos edukologijos universitetas .

Tournament chess

When he was seven years old, Gefenas learned to play chess. First he started playing on the board. In 1981 he received the championship title. He finished well at the Baltic Championships in Daugavpils in 1979, in the Cedok Open in Prague 1985 and at the 55th Championship in Lithuania in 1989. His rating is 2233 (as of August 2014), his highest rating of 2310 he in July 1986.

Correspondence chess

From 1973 Gefenas also played correspondence chess. He participated in the Soviet championship and subsequently in several Soviet tournaments. He qualified for the 1st European Junior Championship, which he won in 1981 (+8 = 2 −0). 1984 followed first place in the 4th Baltic team tournament 1980/85. Finally he won the 25th European Championship in 1987 with 11.5 out of 14.

In 1987 he reached 2nd place in the 3/4 final of the 14th Correspondence Chess World Championship, at the 15th World Championship he was qualified for the finals in 1996/2002, where he finished one of the lower places.

In 1985 the World Correspondence Chess Federation ( ICCF) awarded him the title of International Correspondence Chess Master , and in 2001 he became an Honored International Correspondence Chess Master (SIM).

Private

Gefenas works as a doctor of chemistry.
