Vocoid

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A vocoid (also: vokoid ) is a low-friction, vowel-like, non- consonant sound . In his terminology, Kenneth Pike differentiates between contoid and vocal sounds in order to separate low-friction phonemes such as [j] and [w] from the other consonants and to combine them with the vowels. However, while these form syllabic sounds, [j] and [w] are non-syllabic sounds.
