Kenneth Lee Pike (born June 9, 1912 in Woodstock , Connecticut, † December 31, 2000 ) was an American linguist and anthropologist . He became known for his theory of tag memory and for the terms ' emic' vs. 'etisch ' that he has shaped. From 1947 to 1979 he was President of SIL International . He also constructed the planned language Kalaba-X as an aid for the theory and practice of translations. Pike became the first president of the globally active SIL International (1942–1979) after William Cameron Townsend was ready to hand over responsibility.

Pike was a staunch Christian and tried in part to justify missionary activities in linguistics and anthropology. He was a member of the Christian Peace Conference and participant in the Second All-Christian Peace Assembly in 1964 in Prague , in whose advisory committee he was elected. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for fifteen consecutive years (1982-1996) for his work , but he never received it. Pike was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (since 1973) and the National Academy of Sciences (since 1985).
