The Vogelgesang-Park Magdeburg is an urban park of the city of Magdeburg .

The main features of the 21 hectare park are based on the plans of landscape gardener Rudolf Schoch from 1842 and represent the oldest public park in Magdeburg.

The name of the park goes back to a forest originally located here, in which bird trappers set up nets in the Middle Ages to catch songbirds.

The area was first mentioned in documents in 1377 on the occasion of the acquisition of the land by the Beatä Mariä Magdalenä monastery and the St. Georg hospital. To prevent wood theft, a guard was employed who lived on site in a guard's house and had already created the first "bird song park". The complex was repeatedly destroyed by wars in 1550, 1594, 1631 and 1813. The park was open to the public for the first time as early as 1722 and was mainly used by the lower classes. This is in return for the Herrenkrugpark, which is mainly used by the upper class . There was a small inn on the edge of the Rothensee bush , a flower garden and a maze . The maze was removed as early as 1820. In 1821 a new inn was built, which was later destroyed during the Second World War . In the years 1841 and 1842 the city of Magdeburg acquired the land from the monastery and the hospital. In 1845 it was redesigned according to Schoch's plans.

In addition to large park-like areas, various individual gardens emerged from around 1870, such as the rose garden (1868) with pergola and fountain, the rhododendron valley , the sink and heather garden. The dahlia garden was created in 1925 and hosted the largest German dahlia show. 900 varieties were bred here.

The park developed into a popular destination. In 1950, a pet garden was set up in the northern part of the park, which in 1959 became the Magdeburg Zoo .

In 1980 the park was added to the district monument list as a garden monument. In 1983 and 1984 the historical facilities were reconstructed, especially the rose garden.
