Bird paradise Birka

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The bird paradise “Birka” is a bird park on the Birkahof in the Liechtenstein Mauren on the edge of the nature reserve Birka . It is run by the Mauren Ornithological Association.

Park

The bird paradise “Birka” is located at the “Rhine flood” adventure station on the Liechtenstein-Weg, which was built in May 2019, and directly on the Mauren– Feldkirch cycle path (Josef-Murr-Weg). In currently 11 aviaries you can watch over 140 birds, mainly parrots from Africa, South America, Asia and Australia, but also poultry such as hens and geese . Ornamental chickens are kept species-appropriate in a free flight enclosure sponsored by the International Lottery in Liechtenstein Foundation in 2004 . As in other bird and zoo parks, the care of the animals includes feeding, rearing youngsters, nursing the sick and cleaning the aviary.

The artist Willi Meier († 2015), who was also a member of the ornithological association Mauren, equipped the facility with several sculptural works of art, such as the concrete eagles at the entrance and the octagonal dolphin fountain on the forecourt of the clubhouse. On the western edge of the park, a playground with an adjacent petting zoo was built in 1979, which was redesigned in 2006.

To the south of the club house, you can buy small meals and drinks in the “Birka” kiosk. Log cabins and grills as well as the premises of the club house, which is used as a multi-purpose building, are also rented there if required. In the winter months, the kiosk is moved to the first floor of the club house.

The club today

The Mauren Ornithological Association advocates the promotion of bird protection and care as well as poultry and rabbit breeding. He advises on the protection and maintenance of natural habitats for birds and other animals as well as for plants. In addition, he endeavors to operate comprehensive environmental protection on an ecological basis.

The goals of the association include the holding of factual lectures and the implementation of events, exhibitions and excursions. Further goals are winter feeding and the protection of wild birds as well as the construction of nesting and feeding places and their monitoring. The association supports other nature conservation organizations, looks after injured animals and provides species-appropriate and impeccable feed. He also collects stuffing preparations from native animals as exhibition material and for documentation.

The association's board consists of seven members. The office of president is held by Josef Meier and his representative Richard Schmuck . The number of club members has decreased significantly over the past decade. In 2016 there were only 20 members and 7 benefactor members.

History of the club

Due to persistent disagreements within the ornithological association Liechtenstein Unterland , eight members founded the ornithological association Mauren on December 6, 1963 in the former Café Freiendorf in Mauren. Walter Schreiber was elected the first club president . Tilbert Meier headed the club from 1971 to 2001 .

At first the association dealt with the fulfillment of its set goals and built a feed depot. The youth house on Weiherring initially served as a club house. This had to be given up because of the new building, and in 1972 the association found accommodation in the basement of the Wegacker kindergarten.

In June 1971 the association was able to broker the sale of two private properties northeast of the "Käferzipfels" to the municipality of Mauren, which entrusted it with the care and maintenance of these areas. The "Käferzipfel" was previously used as a pet cemetery. Cockchafers that had been collected up until the late 1940s and later cattle that died of anthrax were buried here. After clearing out and cleaning up the areas, a pond biotope was completed in spring 1972. The first aviary for ornamental poultry was inaugurated on April 19, 1974. On June 1, 1983, the association of the Wisanels landscape area east of the Birkahof was transferred.

In June 1984 the association moved into the multi-purpose building on the Birkahof, and the inauguration of the entire facility was celebrated on July 1st.
