The Vogelpark Steinen is a bird park in the southern Black Forest . It is located in a valley basin in the Steinens municipality between the Schlächtenhaus and Weitenau districts. The site covers an area of ten hectares.

Terrain and facilities

The site was acquired by the operators piece by piece over several years, and a development plan was drawn up at the same time. The aim was to preserve its originality despite the redesign of the landscape. Landscape architects, civil engineers and a team of architects were therefore involved in the planning. The bird park was opened to the public in 1980 in a ceremony with the then Justice Minister Heinz Eyrich and representatives from the state and community. On this occasion, the cultural and economic importance of this company for the small meadow valley and the entire region was highlighted.

Entrance to the park

The tropical house was opened in 1981, and further outdoor facilities were completed over the next few years. Many bird species from all over the world moved in in the first three years. In 1989 a play and adventure area was created in the upper part of the park, as well as - separated from the bird area - a garden restaurant with sun terraces, barbecue areas and shelters. In the years that followed, the ornithological center and the show hatchery were built. The arboretum , a tree garden with the 28 most famous native tree species, was created in 1996. In 1999 the falconry was added with around 600 seats near the entrance. The Barbary ape enclosure was built in 2000, after which the kangaroo enclosure was built. In 2003 the coffee and snack bars were expanded and a film room was set up. In addition, a skull exhibition with almost 40 vertebrate skulls was opened in 2005 . A Kneipp facility opened in 2006 and two boccia lanes were added in 2007 . Little by little, more playgrounds and barbecue areas were added, as well as a labyrinth.

Since the 2012 season, you can find out more about the local bird life on 24 large display boards in the new ornithological center with around 500 m². The motto of the exhibition is "Every bird watcher is a bird protector". The exhibition is divided up with the themes of recognizing birds, native breeding birds, birds of the orchards, the meadowland, the woods, hedges and forest edges, birds of the deciduous forests, the floodplain forests, the coniferous forests, migrants, migrants and winter guests, birds of prey, rock birds, birds at flowing water, ponds and lakes, wading birds, swimming birds, beach and marsh birds, terns and gulls. A variety of original eggs are shown in several showcases. An information board provides information about bird migration.

The park is privately owned and does not receive any government subsidies. All costs incurred must be covered by admission or an animal sponsorship within one season (seven months).

Gryffetal

In the 2011 season the park was divided into two parts. The upper half of the bird park was built by MCTS e. K. ( Medieval Convention Tourism and Seminar ) leased for the “Gryffetal” medieval park. Its name was derived from the Alemannic word "Gryff" for the bird griffin . The Gryffetal took up an area of around 5 hectares. Before the opening of the medieval adventure area, renovation measures were necessary, for example a market hall for trading goods, everyday objects, toys and handicrafts with a medieval reference was set up in the former tropical house. In addition to the tourist business, seminars and children's leisure events are also offered in an area separated by a palisade. This area could also be rented for private parties. There was also a “medieval village” where craftsmen could be seen at work. The inn in the uppermost part of the Gryffetal was continued as a tavern. Music events and markets were on the program several times a year.

Just a few months after the opening of the park, the operator had to file for bankruptcy in August 2011 because the approval to hold seminars on the site was not granted in time and the investment costs were higher than planned. The operation was initially maintained by the provisional insolvency administrator. At the end of 2011, the operator announced on its website that the Gryffetal will not be reopened.
