Volendam (Paraguay)

Volendam is a German colony in Paraguay . The settlement was founded in 1947 by Mennonite refugees who came from what was then the Soviet Union after the Second World War . The place was named after the ship Volendam that brought them to South America. In total, over 1,100 settlers crossed to Paraguay in 1947. In the following year about 1,700 more immigrants were added.

Volendam is located in the geographic center of the country on the Paraguay River and level with the city of San Pedro .

In 2001 there were still around 550 residents with German roots living in Volendam.
