Volker Friedrich (publicist)

Volker Friedrich (born May 5, 1961 in Bottrop ) is a German publicist and has been a professor of writing and rhetoric at the University of Konstanz since 2004.

Career

Friedrich studied philosophy, German and political science at the University of Stuttgart. In 1989 he passed the examination for the Magister Artium in Philosophy and German Studies. In 1992 he did research in the United States at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA, Penn State University in State College, PA, New York University in NYC, and the Office of Technology Assessment (OTA) in Washington, DC . In 1997 he received his doctorate in philosophy, the subject of the dissertation was: "Aspects of philosophical anthropology in the age of the mass media."

From 1984 to 1986 he completed a traineeship as a newspaper editor in the publishing group of the »Stuttgarter Nachrichten«. He then worked as a freelance journalist for newspapers (such as »Der Tagesspiegel«, »Die Welt«, »Stuttgarter Zeitung«, »Die Weltwoche«, »Das Parlament«), magazines (such as »TransAtlantik«, »Wirtschaftswoche«, »Psychologie heute "," Forbes "," Börsenblatt des Deutschen Buchhandels "," Westermanns Monatshefte "," Whole Earth Review "(USA)) and public broadcasters (Süddeutscher Rundfunk, Südwestfunk, Hessischer Rundfunk, Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk, Norddeutscher Rundfunk, Deutschlandfunk) as well as a publicist and book author. In the nineties he published the quarterly publication "West & East - Contributions to the Cultural and Political Issues of the Time".

He has been teaching writing and rhetoric since 2004 and has been a founding member and director of the "Institute for Professional Writing - Image, Presentation and Writing Rhetoric (IPS)" at the University of Konstanz since 2006. In 2006 he was awarded the teaching award of the state of Baden-Württemberg, among other things for the philosophical lecture series, which he has organized and moderated in the Studium generale of the University of Konstanz since 2005 and has archived in a sound archive with over 300 recordings. In addition, the project “Jewish Youth Today in Germany” was named as the reason for the award.

His main research interests are in the areas of philosophical anthropology, media theory, general rhetoric, argumentation theory, cultural and technological theory, philosophy of writing, writing research, design and visual rhetoric.

Friedrich is editor of the scientific e-journal "Language for Form - Forum for Design and Rhetoric".

In 2018 he gave the volume »Thinking Technology. Philosophical Approaches «, in which essays by 28 authors are collected, including texts by Mario Bunge, Carl Mitcham, Walther Ch. Zimmerli, Klaus Mainzer , Ortwin Renn and Armin Grunwald.

Since April 2020 Friedrich has published the blog "Philosophy & Rhetoric - a quarantine blog in times of crisis".
