Volkertshauser hamlet chapel

The Volkertshauser Weilerkapelle St. Mauritius is located in Volkertshaus, a residential area of Mittelurbach, a suburb of the Bad Waldsee municipality in the Ravensburg district . The pilgrimage chapel is located on a moraine hill and is clearly visible from afar.

Building history

The chapel is located on a moraine hill near the Vokertshaus residential area. Presumably there was a small castle with an economic building on today's chapel hill in the early Middle Ages. In the 12th century a small church was built instead, to which the choir was added in the 15th century . In the 18th century, the tower received the onion attachment .

The wooden and plastered west gallery of the small church from the early 16th century was renewed in the 19th century. To the east of the door is a hemispherical stepping sandstone holy water font with a sign "... ALM 1742" . The offering box dates from the beginning of the 16th century. It is 63 centimeters high and has the shape of a wooden pillar. It has a belt-like fitting, the lid and latch are made of wrought iron. The floor consists of square and rectangular brick slabs from the 18th century. In front of the choir step and on its left half, the screed from the time of construction has been preserved. A coarse mortar was poured over large boulders. A pebble tile also emerges in the west end of the ship.

The choir has moved considerably to the north from the axis of the nave. Medieval frescoes cover the interior walls. Most of them are unrecognizable except for an unknown saint in a monk's robe, the Archangel Michael and John the Baptist . The high altar with the side pairs of pillars made of marbled wood was made between 1740 and 1750. In the middle there is a Mother of God in the Gothic style. The crown was only added to it in the Baroque period. The two knights outside on the left represent St. George and St. Mauritius. On the right outside you can see St. Anthony with the pig and St. Sebastian, pierced by arrows. The side altar has a strongly curved structure on the north wall and can be dated to around 1750. In the central niche there is a Pietà from 1480.
