The Volkov Commander ( VC ) is a clone of the MS-DOS program Norton Commander , and its look and feel is very similar to the original. As a file manager in two-window technology, it allows convenient copying, deleting, renaming, viewing, editing or searching for files and directories under MS-DOS and under all Windows versions. Long file names are also supported on Windows. As with the original, it is possible to include your own menu, which is also context-related.
The program was written in 1992 by Wsewolod Wladislavowitsch Wolkow ( Ukrainian Все́волод Владисла́вович Во́лков , English transcription Vsevolod Vladislavovich Volkov ; born March 29, 1971 ), a Ukrainian programmer who was still studying electronics at the time.
The shareware program is one of the few successful file managers that was written entirely in assembly language. Because of this it is faster under MS-DOS than comparable products and with an effective 63 kB (version 4.05) it is unbeatably small. Not least because of this, the VC is part of the basic equipment of many rescue disks, despite its relatively spartan equipment.
The last and therefore current version 4.99.08 Alpha dates from the year 2000. In contrast to the last Final Version 4.05, it can handle long file names beyond the 8.3 notation and can therefore also be used with current Microsoft operating systems.
The final version 5.0 hoped for by many users is still a long time coming.
