The People's Bank in the Sauerland eG is a cooperative bank based in Eslohe (Sauerland) .

history

The population suffered from bad harvests and famine in the 19th century. Farmers and small businesses were particularly hard hit. They were often dependent on private moneylenders, as a result of which many became over-indebted and thereby lost their economic existence.

Under the influence of Pastor Johannes Dornseiffer , the Esloher Loan Fund Association was founded on September 10, 1882. In the founding minutes it is noted that 27 members met on this day for the first General Assembly under the leadership of Chairman Winter. The development of the loan association in the Sauerland advanced in the following years. In 1891 a loan association was founded in Wenholthausen with 56 members. A year later the next founding took place in Cobbenrode with 94 members, in 1895 a foundation in Remblinghausen with 68 members and in 1896 a foundation in Reiste with 69 members.

In 1947, the name was changed to Spar- und Kreditkasse Eslohe eGmuH. In 1967, the Spar- und Kreditskasse Eslohe eGmbH merged with the Spar- und Kreditskasse Cobbenrode eGmbH

After the new Banking Act (1972) came into force , smaller banks would have had problems complying with all regulations. So there was B. the requirement that a credit institution must have at least two managers, who then have overall responsibility for all trading activities of the bank. Heinz Bäumer, Gerhard Engel and Heiner Schmitt, who came from neighboring towns, planned to create a well-established bank from their previously small banks. In 1971 the savings and loan funds Reiste, Kirchrarbach, Remblinghausen and Westernbödefeld merged. In 1972 the merger with the savings and loan bank in Wenholthausen followed. In 1975, the thus grown savings and loan association Reiste eG, then renamed Volksbank Reiste eG.

On June 30, 1977, the merger of Volksbank Reiste eG with savings and loan fund Eslohe eG to form Volksbank Reiste-Eslohe eG took place. In 2001 the headquarters were moved from Reiste to Eslohe. In 2019, the bank merged with Volksbank Marsberg, a registered cooperative, and Spar- und Autovermietung Oeventrop eG. Since then, the bank has been called Volksbank im Hochsauerland eG .
