The Volkshochschule Jena is an adult and further education institution for all population groups.

In 1919, the evening adult education center was opened in Jena under the direction of Wilhelm Flitner . In 1946 the Jena Adult Education Center was reopened, and in 1990 it was finally taken over by local authorities.

Around 400 course instructors work at the 30 locations of the Jena Adult Education Center. The range of courses includes around 900 courses and individual events annually with around 19,500 teaching units in the fields of politics, society, environment / culture and design / health / languages ​​/ work and occupation, IT / school leaving certificates, basic education. There are also courses for first-year students, for catching up on school leaving certificates, for literacy , in project work, for study trips and excursions. 21 foreign languages ​​are taught, with the development going towards short-term, compact and modular courses.

The city of Jena as the sponsor of the adult education center is a member of the Thuringian Adult Education Association. This represents the interests of the 23 Thuringian adult education centers in the state board of trustees for adult education.
