from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The General People's Congress of Libya ( Arabic مؤتمر الشعب العام, DMG Muʾtamar aš-šaʿb al-ʿāmm ) was de jure the parliament in the unicameral system of Libya under the dictatorship of Muammar al-Gaddafi . His actual power was little. Decisions were made outside parliament by Gaddafi and his confidants.

Around 760 delegates were sent to the people's congress from the almost 500 grass-roots congresses in which the adult population of Libya was gathered. These deputies in turn elected the chairman (general secretary) of the People's Congress. The chairman also became the head of state of Libya. Most recently the office was held by Muhammad Abu al-Qasim al-Zuwai .

The People's Congress was located in the capital Tripoli .
