history
In 1973 amateur astronomers founded a non-profit association, the Volkssternwarte Ennepetal eV The main goal was to make astronomy accessible to a broader public. In the same year, an observation station was built on the Hinnenberg, which initially consisted of a hut with a roof that could be opened. In 1995 this was replaced by a 4 m dome.
Instruments
The main instrument is a Newton-Cassegrain telescope with a main mirror 30 cm in diameter. The telescope is equipped with a second focuser and an exchangeable secondary mirror and can be operated either as a Newton telescope or as a Newton-Cassegrain telescope. The focal length is, depending on the structure, 1.5 m (Newton) or 6 m (Newton-Cassegrain).
The public observatory in Ennepetal regularly offers public sky observations and astronomical lectures. In addition, there is a focus on meteorite science . Lectures on meteorites are given, meteorites can be purchased in the observatory and visitors can bring material that is suspicious of meteorites with them for assessment.
