The DDR volleyball championship of the women was in 1980 held for the 30th time. The championship went to SC Traktor Schwerin , which won its third title after 1976 and 1977 . The championship was played as a generous preparation for the 1980 Olympic volleyball tournament in Moscow in October 1979.

The four club teams ( SC Dynamo Berlin , SC Traktor Schwerin , TSC Berlin and SC Leipzig ) determined the champions in a simple round with first legs in East Berlin and second legs in Leipzig .
