Volume weight

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The volume weight or cargo Pflichtes weight (ger .: dimensional weight or weight volume ) is a convenient size that serves the costs of a mission in the air freight (also in other areas) to evaluate. The chargeable weight is the basis for calculating the freight rate . The term does not make sense in physical terms.

The IATA introduced the dimensional weight formula in order to find an economically reasonable measure for the freight costs of bulky light goods.

The calculation of the volume weight is based on the dimensions of a shipment:

Currently, the logistics service providers DP DHL , FedEx , UPS and TNT use the divisor (also English Bulkiness Index ) 5000 for calculating the volume weight . GLS uses a divisor of 6000.

The volumetric weight of the shipment is compared with the actual mass determined with a scale (weighing weight). The higher of the two values is decisive for the freight rate .
