Volvic is the brand name of a mineral water from France. It is named after the French municipality of Volvic , where the Volvic spring was discovered in 1927 .

In 1938 the water was first left natural and bottled in glass bottles without additives. The then mayor of Volvic, Pierre Moity, campaigned for the springs to be set at a depth of 90 meters. In 1965 the product was officially recognized in France as non-carbonated mineral water ("Eau minérale naturelle").

The brand is now part of the Danone food company . The landscape around the Puy de Dôme , an extinct volcano near Clermont-Ferrand , is depicted on the drinks bottles . The most famous view is taken on a north-south axis with the crater of the Puy de Pariou in the foreground and the Puy de Dôme in the background.

In 2000, around 1.2 billion liters of the mineral water were bottled, almost half of which was sold abroad. The main customer is Germany with a share of 44 percent of the total export volume (as of 2000).

criticism

Danone was warned by Lammsbräu in November 2018 for misleading marketing of Volvic as organic mineral water . Lammsbräu made z. B. does not adequately protect the environment and accuses the company of greenwashing . Specifically, Danone was accused of using the “premium mineral water with organic quality” seal from SGS Institut Fresenius. According to Lammsbräu, the seal does not meet organic standards. SGS Institut Fresenius then filed a counterclaim. The proceedings are pending.

The seal “Premium mineral water with organic quality” was developed by the SGS Institut Fresenius. According to the website, it requires the fulfillment of stricter requirements and more frequent laboratory controls than provided for in the Mineral and Table Water Ordinance (MTVO). In addition, the bottling company will be checked in terms of sustainability and environmental protection.
