Von Neumann neighborhood

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Von Neumann neighborhood of the blue cell consists of the 4 red cells.

The Von Neumann neighborhood is a neighborhood relationship in a square grid. Only the areas that have an edge in common with the base area are considered neighbors.

It is named after John von Neumann and is also known as the neighborhood of 4 (or, in analogy to the rook in chess, also called the rook neighborhood ).
