Rudolf von Tobel (born August 20, 1903 in Bern ; † February 24, 1995 there ) was a Swiss cellist and musicologist .

life and work

Rudolf von Tobel studied at the University of Bern and received his doctorate there in 1931 on a musicological topic ( the world of forms of classical instrumental music ). In the 1930s he was a cellist with the Bern Symphony Orchestra . The encounter with the Catalan cellist Pau Casals led to a complete reorientation of his musical thinking. He studied again with Casals and from the mid-1930s became his assistant in his Zermatt masterclasses. In 1941 he wrote a biography of Casals, which he supplemented and revised in a series of new editions over more than half a century.

From 1953 Rudolf von Tobel taught at the Trossingen University of Music .

Von Tobel edited the sheet music for the "Peace Sensoratorium " El Pessebre , composed by Casals between 1943 and 1960 , and also arranged for a new edition of the musical text of Johann Sebastian Bach's 6 Suites for Solo Cello ; this did not appear posthumously until 2004 because it does not focus on the original text but on the interpretation of the Casals school.

A Swiss study foundation based in Bern is named after Rudolf von Tobel . It was founded on December 16, 1998 and serves to promote young cellists.
