Von Zeipel has an impact crater on the back of the Earth's moon and therefore can not be directly observed from Earth . It partially overlaps the eastern edge of the larger Fowler crater and penetrates into its crater floor. It lies between the similar formation of overlapping craters from Esnault-Pelterie and Schlesinger in the north and the crater Klute in the south.
Von Zeipel is a heavily eroded formation, especially on the western and southwestern sides. The boundary line to the surroundings can be clearly seen, although the edge is worn and rounded off by small impacts. The south-southwest rim has a small, eroded crater and the crater floor is marked by a conspicuous, bowl-shaped crater in the northern half.
