Retention time

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term retention time is used in the email area , among other things . It indicates the maximum time that messages can be kept in an e-mail folder, for example in the inbox of the mailbox. The retention time is specified by the service provider. After the retention time of a message has expired, it is removed from the mailbox.

In contrast to the retention time, the storage time of an electronic message depends on the actions of the user.

The deletion of e-mails by a telecommunications provider conflicts with some German laws and regulations, for example with the Telecommunications Act (TKG) and also with the Teleservices Data Protection Act (TDDSG).

Many e-mail services have now switched to no longer limiting the retention time or linking it to the activity of a mailbox.
