Suburbs of Düren

Düren in the Middle Ages

The medieval Düren in North Rhine-Westphalia had several suburbs, one in front of the upper gate , one in front of the Kölntor and in front of the wooden gate .

The suburb in front of the Obertor had two gates, the Eschtor and the church gate. The Eschtor stood opposite the Kurtenbachshof at that time and got its name from the Knight of Esch, whose castle was near the so-called island. The church gate stood at the then municipal tree nursery and got its name from the former Carmelite monastery , which was called the church . This suburb was divided into three streets.

  • The upper suburb, also called "Altwerk", from the Obertor to the Eschtor.
  • The street from Eschtor to Hurengasse.
  • The church street from Obertor to the church gate.

The suburb in front of the Kölntor, then called "Kölnersteinweg", formed just one street and ended at the former chapel gate. This gate stood near today's Adenauer Park, which was formerly the Catholic cemetery of Düren. The chapel gate got its name from the nearby Marienkapelle, which is not to be confused with the later built Trinity Chapel.

  • The suburb in front of the wooden gate stretched from the wooden gate to Orgelgasse (the Orgelgasse was a section of today's Holzstraße and was named after an organ grinder who lived there) and closed with two little gates, one at the entrance to Orgelgasse and one on the side of the later Aachener Chaussee (today's August-Klotz-Straße ).

There were no real suburbs in front of the Philipps- and Wirteltor, but there were small forecourts at some distance from the main gates. These medieval suburbs and front gates of old Düren were completely destroyed in 1543 during the Third War of the Geldrian Succession , also known as the Jülich feud .
