The Vulcan Materials Company is one of the largest producers of building materials of the United States . The internationally active company based in Birmingham , Alabama mainly produces gravel , crushed stone and sand and is listed in the S&P 500 .

history

The company was founded in 1909 as a family business under the name Birmingham Slag Company . After buying up several other companies, the company was merged with the Vulcan Detinning Company of Sewaren in New Jersey in 1956 and has operated under its current name ever since. In 1916, Ohio banker Charles Lincoln Ireland bought Birmingham Slag and entrusted his sons Glenn, Eugene and Barney with the management. During the Second World War , Birmingham Slag benefited from numerous government contracts and in 1944 entered into a strategic joint venture with the gravel manufacturer Lambert Brothers, Inc. from Knoxville (Tennessee) . The Federal Highway Program from 1951 also led to growth and economic success. In 1956, attorney Bernard A. Monaghan took over management and transformed the Birmingham Slag Company into a public company by merging with the Vulcan Detinning Company , based in Sewaren , New Jersey . The resulting company was renamed Vulcan Materials Company . From 1957 there were mergers with Union Chemicals , Lambert Brothers and seven other companies from which the Vulcan Chemicals Division was formed. 1959 WE Graham & Sons is taken over. In 1976 international expansion began through joint ventures in Saudi Arabia and in 1987 with the Mexican partner Grupo ICA, White's Mines, Inc. was taken over in the same year .
