The oldest preserved historical guard house is located in the middle of the allotment garden “6. Measure shaft “e. V. of Silberhofstraße 11a in Freiberg -Süd - the so-called Bahnhofsvorstadt .

History of buildings

Built in 1902 as the first of two guard houses in Freiberg , it is today one of the only surviving structures of this type in Saxony and all of Germany. The second guard house is in the allotment garden in Freiberg-Ost in Scheunenstrasse 2a. Due to their uniqueness and the particularity that they represent in the development phase of allotment gardening, both are listed on the list of cultural monuments in Freiberg-Süd and Freiberg-Ost .

Until 1992, the garden house served on the one hand to accommodate the keeper of the allotment garden. The respective guards lived on the upper floor at reduced rates and worked full-time in different professions. On the other hand, equipment, toilets and rooms for schoolchildren for school garden lessons were housed on the ground floor. The latter has a long tradition at this location with the first school beds founded in 1898.

From 1992 the guard house in Freiberg-Süd stood empty.

Future of buildings

In November 2015 the groundbreaking took place for a fundamental renovation and restoration, which - as of December 2016 - has visibly progressed and has been completed on the building.
