Character for 7.1 sound

Windows Media Video High Definition ( WMV HD ) extends the specifications of Windows Media Video to include high-definition video formats ( HDTV ) 720p and 1080p and sound in surround sound 7.1 in Windows Media Audio . The interlace procedure is completely left out, since the main area of application of the WMV is clearly the computer area and tube monitors as well as TFT and LCD flat screens work with full images ( progressive scan ).

With WMV HD , however, attempts are being made to establish this "standard" in the home as well. The first efforts are being made with HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc , where WMV HD , also known there as VC-1, was included as a preliminary codec . The first feature films are already available in stores on normal DVD with WMV-HD material (called WMV HD-DVD or HD DVD-ROM ). For a long time, however, these could only be played on the PC, as there were still no stand-alone players, and digital rights management (DRM) sometimes required an internet connection to check the playback location (a new type of regional code ). There are now several players that also play WMV HD DVDs, although DRM is still a hurdle for them. Attempts to bypass the playback location by connecting via proxy servers will thwart DRM. The “online” DRM is used, among other things, for Terminator 2: Judgment Day Extreme Edition , the “offline” DRM, which requires an original DVD for testing, is currently used in WMV HD films that are also available in Germany . Since WMV-HD-DVD is a simple and cheap way to store and play HD films with today's media / technologies, this technology is being traded as competition to newer HD media such as Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD.
