WOM was founded in 1982 in Kiel as an independent company that specialized in the sale of sound carriers. By 1987 the company had built up a branch network with seven locations in Germany. In 1987, Hertie Waren- und Kaufhaus GmbH bought 50% from WOM. After that, the music departments in several Hertie stores were replaced by WOM branches (including the Alsterhaus in Hamburg, Frankfurt am Main, Karlsruhe and Cologne). With the takeover of Herties by Karstadt , the WOM branches were removed from the department stores or closed over the years. In 2002 the headquarters of WOM World of Music Produktions- u. Verlags-GmbH relocated from Kiel to Essen and signed a profit transfer agreement with Karstadt.

From 1985 the editorially supervised WOM Journal was published monthly , which was available free of charge in the WOM branches and which was allowed to call itself “Germany's most widely read music magazine”. From issue no. 234 from February 2004 to the last issue no. 288 from December 2008 / January 2009, the magazine was called WOM Magazin . From February 2002 the magazine was also available for a monthly subscription price of two euros.

In May 2009, jpc acquired the WOM brand and continued it for a legally dependent online sales line.

The WOM World of Music production u. Verlags-GmbH remained with Karstadt Warenhaus GmbH and was dissolved after its bankruptcy in 2010. The liquidation is not over yet.
