WON2

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

WON2 , also known as No-WON , is a client - server based network that allows you to play Half-Life and its modifications , most commonly Counter-Strike .

The project came into being after the software manufacturer Valve decided to close the previously existing WON ( World Opponent Network ) and switch to the online distribution platform Steam , which caused heated discussions and speculation among a large number of players . Some players could not use Steam because it had higher hardware requirements than the original WON client. The use of Steam for users of alternative operating systems, such as Linux , was also associated with problems. After a lot of configuration work, the client ran with the Windows API emulation Wine , but unrestricted operation was not possible without any problems. For example, you needed the original 'client.dll' file, which for legal reasons cannot be reproduced.

Differences between Steam and WON2

Similar to Steam, WON2 also has an upgrade to Half-Life 1.1.1.1 (now also 1.1.1.2), which allows you to play on No-WON servers. Before the client is modified with the WON2 patches, Half-Life must be installed from CD and updated to version 1.1.1.0, and the Counter-Strike 1.5 (csv15full) modification must be installed. Then you can apply the no-won patch. In addition, Counter-Strike can be replaced by the current WON2 version 'Counter-Strike 1.5 Extreme-Edition v2' (cs15eev2), which has new features and graphic updates.

A modified and improved version of the shareware ping tool serves as the server browser in the WON2 network .

Anti-cheat tool

WON2VAC and Cheating-Death can be used as anti-cheat tools. So far, most servers use cheating death.

WON2VAC is supposed to prevent cheating in WON2 games and is based on Valve Anti Cheat . WON2VAC is integrated into the WON2 client and is updated with every connection via the WON2 master server. If cheating is suspected, the administrators will be informed, who will review the suspicion and take action if necessary. This can include B. the IP of the cheater on the master servers can be blocked so that you can no longer play on other servers within WON2 (not even on those servers that use cheating death). However, servers can also set up their own ban rules so that the player is only thrown out or blocked locally on a server, for example, without triggering a network-wide blocking. However, many Internet providers change their own IP address at least every 24 hours or after every Internet disconnection, which is why this procedure can only work to a very limited extent.
