WS-1
The WS-1 (卫士 -1, WeiShi-1) is a long-range multiple rocket launcher system of the People's Republic of China . It is used to combat area targets.
development
The WS-1 system (WeiShi-1) was developed by the state arms manufacturer SCAIC (Alit) in the late 1980s . The improved WS-1B system was developed in the mid-1990s . The WS-2 system is a further development .
variants
- WS-1: for missiles with a maximum operational range of 80 km.
- WS-1B: for missiles with a maximum operational range of 180 km.
technology
A tube package with four tubes with a caliber of 302 mm is mounted on the three-axle Tiema XC2200 truck . The rockets are swirl and wing stabilized and have a folding tail. The maximum spread of a rocket volley is 1% of the operational distance. At the maximum combat distance of 180 km, the apogee is 60,000 m. A missile launcher is able to fire all four missiles within twelve seconds. It takes 20 minutes to reload an empty launcher. A battalion with eight WS-1 systems covers a target area of 800 m × 800 m with a total of 32 missiles.
The following warheads exist for the missiles:
- ZDB-1 with a 150 kg fragmentation warhead with 70 kg of explosives. The splinter jacket contains 26,000 steel balls. Splinter action circle 50–60 m.
- YDB-1 with an incendiary warhead containing 24,000 incendiary pellets.
- SZB-1 with 460 pieces of bomblets (submunitions) with a combined fragmentation and armor penetration effect. Spreading area 28,000 m². Each bomblet has a fragmentation circle of around 7 m and can penetrate 85 mm of armored steel .
- SZB-2 with 46 bomblets with combined armor-piercing, fragmentation and incendiary effects. Each bomblet can penetrate 180 mm of reinforced concrete and produce 200 splinters. The incendiary charge has an effective area of around 4 m.
