WT.Social is a social network launched in October 2019 by Jimmy Wales , the founder of Wikipedia .

The idea for WT.Social arose from a previous project, the online newspaper Wikitribune . The website was given up on the basis of WordPress and a new self-developed platform under the name WT.Social and under a new domain was put into operation. Wales wrote that he was convinced that the main problem facing commercial news sites was with their advertising funding, which had led them to be targeted towards traffic. He wanted to avoid this. That's why he founded a new social network on which his own messages are created, which are written by the users themselves. You can register there individually, but it is also possible to register entire groups of friends. He put the number of users at the time of the changeover at 400, at the end of January 2020 it was around half a million. The platform is intended to be an alternative to commercial social networks such as Facebook , which are criticized for their inadequate data protection , among other things .
