Wikitribune (proper spelling: WikiTribune ) was announced in April 2017 and in the October 30, 2017 Beta version published Internet newspaper by Jimmy Wales , founder of Wikipedia . The internet newspaper was discontinued in summer 2019. In October 2019, Wales launched a new initiative, the WT.Social social network .

Wikitribune's goals were fact-based reporting and investigative journalism , a means against fake news and " alternative facts ". According to the hybrid model, paid journalists worked with a community of volunteers.

Volunteers signed in to their account could proofread existing articles , check facts , suggest changes, add sources, and write new articles. Community contributions have been checked and approved by a member of the regular staff. There is a compulsory real name .

The content was published under a CC-BY Creative Commons license .

Wikitribune Ltd was a private for-profit company and was not a project of the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation such as Wikinews . There was no advertising.

Guy Kawasaki , a member of the Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation until December 2016, as well as the US journalist Jeff Jarvis and the British actress Lily Cole were part of the project's advisory team . Editor-in-chief was Peter Bale , who had previously worked for the Reuters news agency and had built up the International Consortium for Investigative Journalists . At the beginning of 2018 there were 13 permanent editors, mostly in London, but also from New Zealand, the USA and Ireland. The number of registered volunteers rose from 1900 when it was founded in 2017 to 7700 at the beginning of 2018.
