Awake craniotomy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the Wachkraniotomie (engl. "Awake craniotomy") is a neurosurgical procedure on the brain ( craniotomy ) in the course of the patient after the opening of the skull ( trepanation is temporarily awakened).

application

The awake craniotomy procedure is used, among other things, to determine the extent to which brain tissue (e.g. near the language center ) can be removed without causing deficiency symptoms. For this purpose, in the waking phase z. B. performed neuropsychological tests of language functions . Through selective electrical stimulation (cf. electrocorticography ) of individual brain areas during this test, the localization of the language center can then be determined (so-called cortical mapping , "cortical mapping "). This method can also be used to localize other (e.g. motor ) functions.

Areas of application of the awake craniotomy are e.g. B. tumor and epilepsy surgery or stereotactic electrode implantation for deep brain stimulation (e.g. in Parkinson's disease ).
