Ark (often also ARK ; Eng .: "Arche") was a Norwegian progressive metal band from Toten , which was founded in 1990, separated in 2002, reunited in 2009 and dissolved again in 2011.

history

The band was formed in 1990 by John Macaluso, drummer for TNT , and Tore Østby, guitarist for Conception . A short time later, Jørn Lande joined the group as the singer . They released their self-titled debut album in 1999.

For the second album, the band went to Area 51 Studios , where they recorded the album Burn the Sun under the direction of Tommy Newton . The bassist was Randy Coven ( Steve Vai , Steve Morse ) and the keyboardist Mats Olausson ( Yngwie Malmsteen ). The album was released in 2001 through InsideOut Music . The band separated in 2002, briefly reunited in 2009 until they finally broke up in 2011. Mats Olausson was found dead in a hotel in Rayong on February 19, 2015 .

style

The band plays classic, technically demanding progressive metal, with Jørn Lande's vocals being particularly distinctive.

The songs The Hunchback of Notre Dame from the Ark and Just a Little from the Burn the Sun album have unmistakable flamenco elements.

Tore Østby explained both the band name and the stylistic openness: "Just as Noah shipped all kinds of animals onto his ark , we process all musical styles that we like in our sound."
