The Wadi Hanifa is in the province of Riyadh , Saudi Arabia situated Wadi . The capital Riyadh was originally to the east of the wadi, but has now expanded to the west across the wadi.
geography
The wadi extends from northwest to southeast over a length of 120 km. The width varies from 100 to 1000 m, the height of the valley walls is between 10 and 100 m. The annual rainfall averages 85 (or 100) mm. Temperatures can drop to 6 ° C in winter and rise to 42 ° C in summer.
use
The wadi is used for agriculture and as a recreational area for the population of Riyadh. The (only partially) treated wastewater from Riyadh (approx. 650,000 m³ daily) is fed into the wadi, so that a flowing body of water has formed over the last 50 km, which is lined with lush greenery.
Weirs (e.g. Al Elb and Al Ha'ir) were also built in the wadi to reduce the risk of flooding in the event of torrential rain.
Ecological renovation
When Riyadh expanded in the direction of the wadi in the early 1970s, the wadi was initially used as a supplier of building materials and parts of the wadi were also used as a garbage dump. The Arriyadh Development Authority had been planning to rehabilitate the wadi since the 1980s . These plans have been implemented since 2004. The cost of the renovation is given as USD 1 billion .
