Waffle doubler

Waffle doubler (or doubler) is a constructive measure in aircraft construction, which is used to prevent the growth of cracks in the outer skin of an aircraft. Waffle doublers are used in the Boeing 737 , for example .

A waffle doubler is a type of net made of sheet aluminum that is attached to the inside of the aircraft skin. If a crack occurs in the outer skin, it will continue to grow until it runs onto the doubler. The crack can no longer grow there and is redirected. This makes it easier to discover during a visual inspection.

Dopplers were first used to reinforce the outer skin of the De Havilland DH.106 Comet after several accidents occurred as a result of structural weaknesses.
