Demogeront

A demogeront ( ancient Greek δημογέρων , pl. Δημογερόντες elders or community leaders ), which formed a kind of local authority in the Greek communities in ancient times, then also during the Middle Ages. Demogeronts were elected by the citizens and, as a result of the inheritance of their office in individual families, gradually gained the position of a kind of local or provincial nobility, which held a privileged position in the Peloponnese . They were also called Archons , Ephors , Gerusia , Proestoi , in Turkish Kodscha-Baschi .
