The Waianiwaniwa River is a river in the region Canterbury on the South Island of New Zealand .
Its source is in the foothills of the New Zealand Alps . It flows into the Selwyn River , this into Lake Ellesmere . The Central Plains Water Trust wants to dam the river for an irrigation project, but this plan is rejected by environmental groups and the local Malvern Hills Protection Society .
In the upper reaches of the river stocks of the rare to the live galaxies counting Canterbury Mudfish ( Neochanna burrowsius ).
