Waimea Plains (Southland)

The Waimea Plains are part of the Southland Plains on the South Island of New Zealand between Gore and Lumsden . The inland area is mainly used for agriculture by sheep and deer farms.

From 1880 to 1978 there was a branch line of the Main South Line , the Waimea Plains Railway , between Gore and Lumsden .

To the west of Invercargill, the Waimea Plains are separated from the Southland Plain by the Hokonui Hills, west of Gore . In the Garvie Mountains form the boundary of the Waimea Plains. The Waimea Plains extend northeast from Invercargill 45 km inland to Gore. They were formed by the Mataura River and its tributary Waimea Stream . At the south end the plain merges into the Awarua Plain . This vast marshland extends from near Bluff to the foot of the Catlins in the east.
