Forest chapel in Sexten

The forest chapel - an emergency church built in Sexten , South Tyrol during the First World War - is now a pilgrimage church .

history

Due to the course of the front in the municipality and the bombardment of the place, the Sesto civilian population was evacuated in August 1915. In 1917, the military administration allowed the farmers of the Ausserberg to return to cultivating the fields.

The church was built in the "Holzer Schluichte" at the "Schermknotten", a large stone block that forms a five-meter-high rock wall on one side , and which offered the Sextner protection from storms earlier. For 14 days, the farmers and the pastor worked on the church from 6 a.m. until dark. The wood for the church came from a hay barn that was crushed by snow, and some trees were also felled.

On Saturday afternoon, the Sesto priest taught the few students in Honsa Lois in the room, was on Sunday morning in the forest chapel worship celebration and an afternoon prayer . After the breakthrough on the Isonzo in 1917, a large part of the Sesto population returned.

The chapel, which is almost entirely made of wood - today also known as the Peace Chapel - is located on the biblical path of reflection in Sesto. As the chapel threatened to fall apart, it was restored in 1974. Not far from the chapel there are shell stones that were discovered by Pastor Küer and are among the oldest traces of settlement in Sesto.
