The Waldschänke from Raschwitzer Straße

The Waldschänke Lößnig was a popular restaurant in the southern Leipzig floodplain forest .

location

The Waldschänke was on Lößniger Flur near the overpass of the Leipzig-Hof railway line on a viaduct over the Pleisse . It could be reached from Lößnig via Raschwitzer Straße or from Connewitz past the Connewitz forest pool and through the viaduct.

history

The Waldschänke was built around 1880. It comprised two buildings and a separate dance hall as well as outdoor seating under the forest trees in summer. The buildings were built on brick pillars one meter high to protect against frequent floods and could therefore only be reached by stairs. Their heyday lasted until the beginning of the Second World War .

During the war, the restaurant served as a warehouse for foreign forced laborers from Junkers Flugzeug- und Motorenwerke AG. The hall building was also destroyed during the war.

After the Second World War, the restaurant was open again, but never regained its previous popularity. Eventually it had to give way to the construction of the new four-lane route on trunk road 2 (today Bundesstrasse 2 ) at the beginning of the 1970s and was demolished.
