The Waldviertler Regional ( Waldviertler for short ) was a regional currency in the Waldviertel region in the Austrian state of Lower Austria .

The exchange rate is linked to the euro with 1 W = 1 € . There are banknotes in circulation with a value of 1 W, 2 W, 5 W, 10 W and 20 W. Due to the circulation protection , the notes lose their validity at the end of a quarter and can be paid by sticking tokens, which are available for a fee of 2% of the original value are available to be renewed. A regional contribution of 5% has to be paid for the re-exchange in euros, which is used by various non-profit organizations.

As a complementary currency , it does not replace the official currency, the euro , but serves as an additional means of payment currently recognized in around 200 companies. In order to be allowed to trade officially with the Waldviertler , a membership in the association for regional economy is necessary, which is free of charge for companies and customers.

The Waldviertel was introduced on May 1, 2005 by the Association for Regional Economics .

Security features

In order to avoid counterfeiting, the banknotes have several security features. On the one hand, there is a serial number and a reflective coating on the front, which means that the currency symbol only becomes visible several times when the light falls at an angle. In addition, the quarterly stamps themselves have a tilting effect in which vertical stripes can be seen. The back of the notes is also printed with new motifs every year.

In addition, there are two other security-relevant features that are not publicly known.

Current numbers

As of June 2013, 206 member companies can pay with Waldviertler-Regional - January 2006: 186, at that time there were 27,905 "Waldviertler-Regional" in circulation, in 2009 there were around 40,000 W in circulation, which were accepted by around 200 companies. As of 2011, the municipality of Heidenreichstein will be the first municipality in Lower Austria to accept the payment of municipal tax.

No figures are known about the actual velocity of the "Waldviertler-Regional". Due to the relatively large number of banknotes issued, a rather slow circulation speed can be assumed.

Setting the currency

The project ended after 11 years. The remaining Waldviertel residents could be changed back until the end of March 2017.
