List of apple varieties

Crown Prince Rudolf (Austrian "Crown Prince") is one of the numerous varieties of the cultivated apple ( Malus domestica ); it is a small to medium-sized winter apple with a flattened and evenly round shape and a short stiff stem.

history

There are apparently two different traditions about the origin of this apple variety:

Johann Kloeckner

The variety was discovered by Johann Klöckner in his orchard in Wolfgruben near Gleisdorf in Styria ( Austria ) and presented to the public in 1873 at the Vienna World Exhibition and in honor of the then Austrian heir to the throne, Crown Prince Rudolf (1858 to 1889), son of Emperor Franz Joseph I. from Austria-Hungary , named.

Franz Pfann

In 1901 Franz Pfann, a well-known pomologist from Pöllau near Hartberg - who was already selling his fruit and vegetables at the time. a. sent in boxes to Tromsoe, Alexandria, Corfu, the southern French seaside resort of Biarritz and "to some archducal court camps" - awarded at the 1st Austrian Imperial Horticultural Exhibition. He received the honorary diploma of the horticultural association and 100 crowns in gold as well as the bronze medal for 2 new apple varieties. According to tradition, one of these varieties was the "Crown Prince Rudolf".
The Pfann house also had the document with which the imperial family permitted the use of the Crown Prince's name for a new apple variety until the house was occupied by the Russians in 1945. However, it got lost in the post-war chaos. Witnesses who are still alive can remember this document. To what extent Pfann and Klöckner were involved in this new apple variety within the framework of the pomologists' association is not yet known.
