Valery Ivanovich Voronin ( Russian Валерий Иванович Воронин ; born July 17, 1939 in Moscow , † May 19, 1984 ibid) was a Soviet football player . He was a versatile midfielder who could also be used as a central defender.

Voronin played for Torpedo Moscow from 1958 to 1969 . With this team he won the Soviet championship in 1960 and 1965 and was twice a cup winner of the Soviet Union. In 1964 and 1965 he was Soviet footballer of the year .

Between 1960 and 1968 he made 66 appearances in the Soviet national team , scoring five goals. In 1962 he took part in the World Cup in Chile, at the European Championship finals in 1964 he was with the Soviet team in the final against eventual winner Spain. In 1966 at the World Cup in England he reached fourth place with the Soviet team.

In the summer of 1969, Voronin suffered a car accident and was seriously injured. Although he was able to recover physically relatively quickly, he never found his way back to his old form. He had to end his career and fell into alcohol. In 1984 he was found murdered, the case could never be solved. Voronin was buried in Moscow's Danilov Cemetery.
