Walking on the Moon is a song by The Police from 1979. It was released on November 4, 1979 as the second single from the second studio album Reggatta de Blanc . The song was written by Sting and is one of the more reggae- influenced songs by The Police.

Emergence

The song was produced by Nigel Gray and The Police. Sting wrote it after a concert in Munich when he was drunk. The next morning he remembered the song and wrote it down.

“I was drunk in a hotel room in Munich and slumped on the bed with a fat skull when this riff came into my head. I got up and walked across the room and sang, "Walking round the room, ya, ya, walking round the room". That was all. In the cool morning light, I remembered what had happened and wrote down the reef. But "Walking around the Room" was a stupid title, so I thought of something even more stupid, "Walking on the Moon" "

- Sting, L'Historia Bandido, 1981

Sting wrote in his autobiography that the song was partially inspired by a former girlfriend:

“Deborah Anderson was my first real girlfriend. Going home from Deborah's house in those early days eventually became a song because to be in love is to be freed from gravity. "

- Sting, 2003

Walking on the Moon was originally created in a rockier version, but it has been reworked. The bass riff was described by Sting as "weird" and "jazzy". Guitarist Andy Summers contributed a clean riff that is played "behind" the bass tones throughout the song.
