Entrance to the Wallgraben Theater in Freiburg's Rathausgasse

The Wallgraben Theater in Rathausgasse in the center of Freiburg im Breisgau was founded by a group of theater-loving students in a former wine and air raid shelter in the backyard of Wallstrasse as a small cellar theater ( Kleines Theater am Wallgraben ).

At the first performance on June 16, 1953, A Sleep Prisoner was played by Christopher Fry . At the end of the 1960s, it moved to the basement of the New Town Hall in Rathausgasse. It was also directed by Ingeborg Steiert († 1997) and the actor Heinz Meier († 2013), who was best known for his participation in Loriot's sketches. The theater has around 100 seats and was the first theater in 1975 to stage Loriot skits. In 2003 Meier's niece Regine Effinger took over the management. The actor Hans Poeschl has been a co-owner since 2008 and runs the theater together with his wife Regine Effinger. In 2007, 32,577 spectators attended the 311 performances; in 2010 there were 27,661 spectators at 258 performances, in 2015 a total of 24,038 visitors attended the 229 performances. Since 2004 there has been an open air production in the inner courtyard of the New Town Hall (250 seats) during the summer months.
