Remnants of the city wall on Wallstrasse

The Wall Street in Düren , North Rhine-Westphalia , is a historical road.

The old street is right behind the Düren city wall , which is still well preserved there. The Düren Paper Museum is located in Kleine Wallstraße . The Leopold Hoesch Museum is at the northern end of the street .

The name of the street is a historically misleading name. Since ancient times it has been called “Behind the Wall”, which refers to the protective city wall. The wall was outside the city beyond the city wall. The name Wallstraße would have been justified for the Lindenpromenade , today August-Klotz-Straße , which runs on the leveled wall.

The historical name had to be dropped due to an input from interested parties who misunderstood the meaning, and on October 28, 1892 the city council decided to call the street Wallstraße in future.

At the same time opening up and building the road to Peschstrasse was considered, and in 1905 it was done for health reasons, since the houses there, glued to the city wall, had an entrance at the front, but no exit to the rear. It was carried out to the newly laid out Poliusstraße and thus got a connection with the later Hoeschplatz.

Wallstrasse is one of the few streets in Düren that is still paved with cobblestones .
